Gesualdo was one of the most remarkable composers of the 16th century. Not in the least for his turbulent love life. After discovering that his wife had an affair with the Duke of Andria, he devised a plan to kill them both. He faked leaving on a hunting trip, and then caught them during the act and stabbed them multiple time, with the aid of his servants. Then he had the bodies dragged in front of his palace for everyone to see. He did not face conviction, because he was nobility, but fearing an act of revenge, he hired a band of mercenaries to protect him.
